This innovative and powerful album tells the story of travelling through the Holy Land on the eve of the millenium. Eight songs concisely capture a series of journeys to places where Jesus would have walked 2000 years ago and describe raw encounters with the people living there today. Jews, Palestinians, Christians, and Muslims are caught up in the songs' search for peace, justice, and reconciliation in a beautiful yet strife ridden land. Polished, hard-hitting lyrics form the steely backbone of 'Backbone', fleshed out in smooth melodic vocals from the two Jonnys, Baker and Birch, and the seductively sweet voice of Laura MacGregor. Moody trip hop beats and some seriously funky basslines keep things rolling, and the production is superlative throughout, complex and lavish, shot through with haunting Middle Eastern and eastern European musical references. This is an album of substance both lyrically and musically, that grows with repeated listening.
